Digital distributor acquires US digital rights to over 100 hours of factual content
Leading Toronto-based digital distribution company Syndicado has inked a digital distribution deal with the UK’s largest independent content distributor Cineflix Rights that sees the company acquire the digital rights to over 100 hours of factual content for the US.
The deal with Cineflix Rights covers a broad range of factual entertainment series and documentary content.
Highlights include the hit paranormal activity reality television series ‘Most Haunted’ (20 x 60’), and ‘Wild Animal Rescue’ (6 x 60’), which originally aired for Animal Planet and follows an international animal welfare organization. Other series featuring in the agreement include ‘Is That a Nail in Your Head?’ (6 x 60’), which premiered on TLC revealing miraculous medical triumphs.
The agreement also includes the 6 x 30’ food travel series ‘Delinquent Gourmet’ that aired on Food Network Canada. The series follows Canadian celebrity chefs Gord Martin and Rodney Bowers, who scour the globe in search of great local food and experiences.
The deal also includes feature documentaries such as ‘Battle of the Somme’ (90’), a film following a team of investigators who use forensic science to determine whether combat footage of the infamous World War I event is real or fake.

Syndicado also has 97 episodes of Rich Bride, Poor Bride, which was originally produced by Canada’s Buck Productions for Slice in Canada and US cablenet WE tv, available for purchase by VoD platforms.
Other wedding-themed reality series on the slate include Petal Pushers (13×22’) and Cake Walk (13×45’), while fellow Buck Productions series Keys to the VIP (39×22’) is also being shopped having previously aired on Comedy Network and Fuse TV.
Other content with a military theme, meanwhile, includes Prelude to War, the classic Frank Capra film that won an Oscar for Best Documentary in 1943.
The company is also representing more than 25 hours of war-themed documentaries featuring rare and archive footage exploring the machinery, operations, leadership and strategies employed by the Allies in World War II.
Titles include The Dambusters Raid, Great American Generals, Memphis Belle and Battle of Britain, plus content with modern military themes such as After Desert Storm and Stealth: The Art of Deception.
Canadian distributor Syndicado has acquired US digital rights to a raft of factual programming, including nature doc American Tiger, from fellow Canuck sales outfit Filmoption International.
Toronto-based digital specialist Syndicado has picked up more than 30 hours of factual entertainment and documentary content for the US digital market.
Produced by Canadian prodco Peripheria Productions and originally airing on Nat Geo Wild, American Tiger (1×60’) investigates the relationship between humans and the endangered big cat.
Environmental series Avoiding Apocalypse (6×60’), produced by French firm Espace Franco Images, follows scientists who are developing technology to help tackle environmental issues. The show originally aired on Discovery Science in Canada.
Syndicado has also taken Discovery travel series The Joy of Touring (13×60’), which showcases tourism experiences.
Wrapping up the slate are science documentaries Two of a Kind and The Antibiotic Hunters, which are standalone episodes from CBC’s The Nature of Things series.
The former involves a study of identical twins, while the latter features scientists scouring ice caves and deep ocean trenches and collecting crocodile blood in the hope of discovering rare bacteria with which to create new antibiotics.
Greg Rubidge, president of Syndicado, said he was confident audiences of US digital platforms will “enjoy such a wide range of premium factual content.”
The deal comes soon after Syndicado secured more than 100 hours of content from Madrid-based distributor Feelsales, UK independent producer Filmcell International and French sales house Java Films.
Toronto-based distributor Syndicado has acquired US digital rights to a documentary following Leonard Cohen on tour in 1972 that had long been presumed lost.
Bird on a Wire has been picked up by the digital-focused distributor as part of a seven-doc deal with UK documentary director Tony Palmer and UK producer Isolde Films.
Bird on a Wire follows Cohen on his 1972 tour, when confrontations with fans and security guards culminated in an emotional crisis in Jerusalem.
Revered by Cohen devotees, the film only ever existed in bootleg form until 2010 when it was painstakingly restored from the original footage.
Other titles featured in the deal include The World of Peter Sellers, a doc originally banned by the BBC in 1971. Palmer’s profile of the late star was, in the words of the film’s subject himself, “the only portrait which really understood me.”
The World of Hugh Hefner, The World of Liberace, portraits of the German composers Hindemith and Carl Orff, plus a controversial examination of The Wagner Family are also included.
Syndicado will now shop the docs to the US VoD market

An agreement with Madrid-based international sales agency Feelsales sees Syndicado acquire ten documentary film titles including travelogue ‘The Turkish Way’ that follows the three Roca brothers, owners of the famous El Celler de Can Roca, as they explore the amazing culinary potential of Turkey, and ‘Santa Fiesta’, which documents Spain’s animal cruelty in religious festivals.
Syndicado has also acquired 18 documentary film titles from French sales agent Java Films for digital distribution in the World outside France. Key titles include ‘Post Truth Times’ an investigative film featuring Noam Chomsky and journalists from The Guardian and the New York Times, exploring how the latest developments in media and journalism are shaping society. ‘Church: Code of Silence’ uncovers secret internal documents that reveal how church officials protect priests accused of paedophilia by moving them from country to country. And ‘Miami SWAT’ follows the city’s elite police unit. With an arsenal of military grade weapons at their disposal, they’re responsible for tackling drug dealers, traffickers and combatting armed robberies at the frontline of the cocaine trade’s gateway into America.
A deal with Bristol-based independent producer Filmcell International sees Syndicado acquire over 46 hours of content for distribution in the US and Canada. The catalogue includes four series’ of ‘Carib-Asian Cookery’, hosted by husband and wife presenting duo Patrick Hart and Sherrie Eugene-Hart, paranormal reality series ‘Shadow Chasers’ (6 x 30’) and ‘The Barber Lounge’ in which professional barber Kieran Sarkozi interviews local heroes and celebrities as they share personal life
stories from the barber’s chair. All shows were originally produced for city-based TV network Made TV.

Syndicado has inked digital distribution deals with two European companies that
sees the company acquire the digital distribution rights to over 70 hours of
independent documentary and feature film content for the US and multiple territories.
The agreement with Danish sales and distribution business LevelK will see
Syndicado represent a catalogue of over 20 arthouse and indie films including
several Official TIFF Selections and eco documentary ‘The Last Ocean’ in the US.
The deal also sees Syndicado acquire the digital rights for UK, Australasia and
South Africa on many of the titles.

Danish movie ‘Sex, Drugs & Taxation’ (original title ‘Spies og Glistrup’) deals with the

gets lost in the biggest city-slum in Africa. Dressed in trendy shoes and fancy clothes
he clearly stands out, but after he gets mugged he looks like any other African boy.

Russian production company Look Film for a varied slate of over 54 hours of
content. The deal features 20 scripted feature and documentary films and unscripted
history and reality series including movie ‘The Soul of a Spy’ (‘Dusha Shpiona’)
starring Liam Cunningham (‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Clash of the Titans’) and Malcolm
McDowell (‘A Clockwork Orange’).

On Sunday, September 17, CIFF hosted their annual Awards Ceremony, presenting four awards for documentary features and one for a documentary short, in addition to its Points North Pitch Award.
This year’s jury of Molly O’Brien (Fork Films), Robb Moss (Filmmaker), and Jose Rodriguez (Tribeca Film Institute) awarded the 2017 Harrell Award for Best Documentary Feature to Ziad Kalthoum’s Taste of Cement, with Special Jury Mention going to Gustavo Salmerón’s Lots of Kids, a Monkey and a Castle.
Taste of Cement won six awards since its World Premiere in Nyon in April.

The International Documentary Film Festival CRONOGRAF has announced its winners at the closing ceremony of its XIVth edition. The Closing Gala has taken place on May 30th at the Cultural Center “Odeon”.
Bezness as Usual, directed by Alex Pitstra, with Tadeusz Kieniewicz, Alex Pitstra, Rosan Breman as directors of photography, won the Special Mention of the Main Section for the courage it takes to bring to the screen a personal story and for reflecting complex relationships between people belonging to different cultures.
The Public’s Choice Award of the Main Section went to Secondo Me, directed by Pavel Cuzuioc.
The jury members of the Main Section were the Moldovan actor and the president of the jury Valeriu Andriuță, the Polish director Bartosz Konopka, Zlatinka Rousseva (Belgium), documentary filmmaker and programmer at the International Documentary Film Festival “Millenium”, Artur Vardikyan, film critic and festival organizer of the Yerevan International Film Festival, and Taalaibek Kulmendeevis, film director, producer and president of the Filmmakers Union of Kyrgysztan.
In the competition participated 16 feature documentaries and 5 short films in the Main Section, 12 films in the cadRO Section and 9 documentaries from Republic of Moldova in the Local Productions Section. In the A LIKE for a Documentary Section, dedicated to teenagers and youngsters, 10 documentaries were screened.
IDFF CRONOGRAF, the largest film event in Republic of Moldova and an important festival in the circuits of the East European festivals, is organized since 2001 by the OWH Studio NGO.
The dash-cam doc will be released later this year
TORONTO – Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired North American rights to Dmitrii Kalashnikov’s The Road Movie. The deal was negotiated by Aleksandar Govedarica following North American premiere at True/False.
“Simply brilliant” says Greg Rubidge, founder and co-director of Syndicado Film Sales, “We elated to be working with Dimitri and representing The Road Movie, which captures everyday life in Russia as told through dash cam footage. Simple in concept and brilliantly executed, it’s be a hit since its world premiere at IDFA.”
Kalashnikov said, “I’ve never even dreamed about my film being distributed in the U.S. Thanks to Syndicado who believed in the film. It’s a great honor for me that ‘The Road Movie’ will be in the company of such great titles that Oscilloscope works with.”
This fascinating mosaic of asphalt adventures and landscape photography, in which video footage from a variety of dashboard cameras presents the absurd and frightening nature of Russia. Alongside a series of bizarre car accidents on the country’s roads, the dashboard cameras also capture other spectacles through the windshield, such as a hysterical wedding guest, a confused man and a horse-drawn sleigh.
The film is produced by Volia Chajkouskaya of Volia Films in co-production with Eight and A Half Studio, Novi Film and Light Cone Pictures.
Kalashnikov’s observational documentary will celebrate its Canadian premiere in Toronto in April. Audiences will have the chance to see The Road Movie in North American theaters later this year.
